The roof is on our charity build

What a difference a week makes. When we last checked in with our Wairarapa team, the frames and trusses were going up. We turn our eyes for just a few days, and already the roof is on! Dan, Barry and Justin have been working at lightning speed to steer this charity build to completion, and [...]

Installing Pink Batts

An insulated home is a healthy and efficient home. Brenda and Eddy have already taken steps to reduce their energy bills and ensure their family’s health and wellbeing by double glazing the windows in their new home. Now, with Batts installed in the walls and ceiling, they’re well on their way to a cosy home [...]

The trusses are going up

With the frames in place and straightened, our builders Justin, Dan, and Barry set to work on the trusses. Together with the frames, the trusses provide the support network for the walls and roof of the home. We choose renewable timber for its natural insulating properties.

Meet Steve Ramsay, our bricklayer.

One of the perks of building a house is meeting the people along the way whose skills and effort have made your home a reality.

This week we spent some time catching up with Steve Ramsay, the bricklayer working on Brenda and Eddy’s home.

“I have been brick, block, tile laying and solid plastering for 30 and a bit years and  am now passing on my trade and skills to my son Nathan, who is working with me and is part way through his apprenticeship.

I am married,  have 4 sons and 2 grand daughters and when I’m not working or DIYing around our house,  I enjoy fishing and diving in summer,  then cooking the catch or something else creative with a drink or two and sharing it with family and friends. During the winter I enjoy coaching and watching my boys play rugby and socialising at the Taradale rugby club.”

Taking shape

With frames going up on site today, rooms in the home are starting to take shape. Gareth has decided on the Hillstone design, a spacious home perfect for a family. Open plan kitchen and dining leads onto two living areas. Four double bedrooms mean space for the whole family. And a master bedroom complete with [...]

Getting ready for framing

Soon after the floor is poured, pre specified cuts are made along the concrete. These lines in the surface give the floor a way to release pressure, ensuring it holds its shape and doesn’t crack. It’s a little like scoring a sausage before you put it on the barbie, but with an industrial sized knife! [...]

“And the winner is…”

The weatherboard has been painted and, as you can see, Brenda has gone with our readers’ choice of “Tall Poppy”. Combined with Monier brick in earthy “Rumble Grey”, the red offers a vibrant contrast and an interesting exterior feature. On a beautiful day like today it really packs a punch. We love it! What do [...]

Making progress

Wet weather and the festive season didn’t stop our team making progress on Brenda and Eddy’s home. There’s been action both inside and out, with water pipes being fitted in the walls and the brick and weatherboard cladding going up on the exterior. Watch out for the next post when we unveil Brenda’s colour choice [...]

Pouring the floor for Ronald McDonald House

It’s a beautiful day in Carterton and the team from PC Concrete are on sight to pour the floor.

There seem to be a few more photos than usual today, and we think we know why.

Spreading and levelling the concrete is quite a physical task—a great day to be behind the camera rather than in front of the float!

Keep up the great work team.
